The 'venerable' Pere Vila Salo was a beneficed-priest at the church of Sta Maria del Mar. He had a notable number of books, paintings and musical instruments among his many possessions. The inventory was begun on 18 March 1547, but it was some days later on Tuesday 29 March that the inventory-takers reached a small room off the study ('vn retret de vn studi') where he had four musical instruments: two vihuelas and two clavichords: 'dos viols rahoanbles' and 'vn manacort pintade sobre lo cobert de vert rahonable' and 'altre manacort tot lis'. It is interesting that at least some of these intrsuments appear to have been playable at the time of his death. Also in this room were several retables (St Christopher, the Last Supper and St Gabriel), and a number of paintings, including one of a 'dona francesa' on canvas, and a 'pintura de fransa' painted on paper. Either he travelled to France or such paintings were available in Barcelona.
In his study he had a large collection of books, including works by the church fathers and later theologians (Augustine, Ambrose, Aquinas, St Bonaventura), and classical authors such as Virgil (Bucolics), Horace, Pliny, Tullius, Ovid (Metamorphosis), etc, by humanists such as Valla, Nebrija and Erasmus, and verse by Dante, Petrarch and the Cancionero general. He also had a number of breviaries, a diornal and other such liturgy-related books, and, interesting Boethius's De consolatione. This was a real library that reflected a wide range of interestes and linguistic abilities.
The encant was begun on Friday 1 April 1547, and a number of books were sold. On Friday 13 May, one of the vihuelas was sold to Joan Ponces for 5s 6d. It is possible other instruments were sold, but the state of the document is very poor, and literally crumbled away even on careful handling; it may well also be incomplete.
