In the chapter meeting of 26 July 1553, the ecclesiastical community of Seville Cathedral debate the question of having salaries minstrels for the cathedral, as they had previously has, for example, in 1527, when they were the first cathedral in the Iberian Peninsula to have a salaried wind band. The interest of the passage lies in the justification for this development: a cathedral of Seville's standing should have this  resource since  other cathedrals, with fewer resources, have them; they are appropriate to enhance the many processions held by the cathedral each year; and they incite people to greater devotion.

Si sería bien que obiese en la dicha santa [iglesia] la música de menestriles salariados como solía aver e si se procuraría alquilarlos los días que fuesen necesarios, como se a yntentado a hazer sin dalles salario hordinario, pareçió a todos que hera cosa muy decente y conforme a la divina escritura que la dicha sancta yglesia fuese servida con todo género de música onesta como son los dichos menestriles, porque siendo tan ynsigne y grande tempo como lo es tiene muncha necesidad de la dicha música por su sonoridad pues lo tienen todas las yglesias cathedrales dEspaña de muncho menos posibilidad, mayormente que saliendo como salen todos los benefiçiados y clérigos desta sancta yglesia en prosiçiónmunchos días solenes del año a alrededor de la dicha yglesia y para yr a las yglesias parrochiales y monesterios desta dicha çibdad de muy largos trechos y conviene mucho la dicha música para yr más honrradas y autorizadas las dichas prosiçiones y para que con más devoçion y afeçion se mueven e ynçite al pueblo a las acompañar y venir a los divinos ofiçios a la sancta yglesia.
